WLP recently received three grants to support youth programs on the Whitefish Trail. A grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) sponsored by Toyota will support the cost of educational materials and equipment for youth camps and service projects. Field guides, art supplies, work gloves, and transportation costs will help us get more kids out on the trail to teach them about the importance of community service, wildlife habitat, clean water and healthy forests.
A grant from the Flathead Conservation District enabled WLP to purchase ten sets of binoculars for our education programs. The value of this grant doubled when Eagle Optics donated an equal number of binoculars which, in combination with insect nets, hand lenses and track replicas, allow children to more closely examine birds and wildlife in the woods. Our programs focus on making learning fun and interactive, and having the proper equipment is important to creating a positive and engaging experience. Our programs focus on making learning fun and interactive and having the proper equipment is important to creating a positive and engaging experience.
A grant from Flathead Electric’s Round Up for Safety program will assist WLP to launch a Junior Bike Patrol this year. These funds will pay for first-aid kits and CPR/first-aid training for youth. This spring, we will be unveiling a new Junior Bike Patrol, where kids ages 12-18 will team up with a mentor to participate in the program. This volunteer opportunity gives youth the opportunity to learn about safety while recreating outdoors and improves the overall safety coverage of the Patrol.
Thank you NEEF, Toyota, Flathead Conservation District, Eagle Optics, and Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Round Up for Safety Program for supporting youth and education on the Whitefish Trail in 2016!
