Public Reception and Media Event on March 2
Whitefish Legacy Partners (WLP) has been awarded a $500,000 Recreation Trails Program matching grant from the Montana State Parks Recreation Bureau. A community reception and media event will be held at the Lion Mountain Trailhead of the Whitefish Trail on March 2 at 1pm. Representatives from the Whitefish Legacy Partners, City of Whitefish, U.S. Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will be in attendance in addition to community members and area business owners.
WLP is delighted to reinvest this grant in this public/private partnership that will continue to drive our economy and permanently conserve these important community recreation areas. Tourism and recreation continue to be a bright spot in the economy in the Flathead Valley, and as such WLP is privileged to be able to work with the DNRC to harmonize the traditional wood product industry with this emerging strong fiscal driver of tourism and recreation. Not only does the Whitefish community benefit from these enhanced conservation areas and trails, the state benefits from continued timber harvesting and ultimately, Montana’s schools and universities are the beneficiaries of this economic success story.
An information tent will be well stocked and staffed during the March 2 event at Lion Mountain. Representatives from WLP will be present for interviews, refreshments will be available and the Whitefish Trail is in prime condition for skiing or winter hiking after the event.WLP, and its partners including Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, U.S. Forest Service, DNRC and the City of Whitefish, are exploring ways to create public recreation areas that include trails, forest management, viewsheds, wildlife and watershed protection while compensating Montana’s schools and universities.
