Megan Pepe’s Whitefish Middle School homeroom helps out at Lupfer
Over the last couple of days, our weather has been back to the cooler, wetter June we are used to. Consistent rains are keeping the wildflowers blooming, the trails in good condition, and keeping trail dust at bay! Before we know it, the dog-days of summer will be here and the huckleberries will be ripening - word is some hucks are already ripe!
Thank you for your patience as we recently made improvements to the Reservoir Trail lower switchbacks. We worked with Montana Made Trails, Flathead Area Mountain Bikers, and Forestoration to reinforce and re-grade the switchbacks to create a more sustainable surface while also increasing the switchback turn radius allowing for safer navigation. The East-West Connector at Spencer Mtn. is currently being re-routed to mitigate severe erosion, so keep you eye on our social media for updates and photos.
The Volunteer Whitefish Trail Crew has also been hard at work out on the trail. They built a turnpike at Lupfer to create a dry, elevated trail tread surface through a boggy part of the trail. Lupfer also received more love in mid-June from Megan Pepe’s homeroom class where students cut back overgrown vegetation along the trail corridor. On National Trails Day, community volunteers kicked off a restoration project at Lion Mountain to address trail creep. Our Adopt-a-Trail Crews have also been keeping the trail in great shape this spring! We hope you continue to enjoy and celebrate our local trail system this summer! Happy huckleberry hunting!
