December Trail Report!

December was off to a snowy start on the Whitefish Trail, but given recent temperature fluctuations and mixed precipitation, conditions are hugely variable across the trail system. Traction devices are recommended on all trails. As icy puddles develop, engage your inner small child and stomp through. Please do not walk around them as it widens the trail and damages surrounding vegetation. Hopefully we will get back on a snow trend soon and the mud, puddles, and ice will become beautiful, snowy trails.

The following WT trailheads are plowed for winter access: Lion Mountain, Skyles, Beaver Lakes, Swift Creek, Reservoir, Big Mountain, and Holbrook Overlook. The DNRC Lower Whitefish Lake Rd gate is closed as winter use and grooming has begun.

We’d like to give a huge shout-out to Craggy Earth for generously plowing the Reservoir Trailhead this winter at no cost as a WT community service! Austin Sherper and Dan Hebbeler both call Whitefish home and shared that they “love how community-based it is and want to give back.” Thank you, Austin and Dan! Please help us support the local businesses that support our trails: Craggy Earth Snow Removal Services Austin Sherper – 406-407-6702 & Dan Hebbeler – 406-405-1599.

If ski travel is your thing, enjoy the community Nordic trails accessed from the Big Mountain Trailhead. Check Glacier Nordic Club's website for updates on their grooming schedule and latest conditions and consider supporting GNC's grooming efforts online.

When out walking or snowshoeing on groomed trails, remember to stay to the side of the groomed track to protect the track for skiers. As a reminder, please help us keep the trails clean and pick up your dog's waste.

Send your trail reports and photos to info@whitefishlegacy.org!
