Be Bear Aware on the Whitefish Trail

September is Bear Aware month in Montana, partly due to fall being a special period of hyperactivity for bears. As their caloric needs increase before winter, bears enter a period of increased scavenging, called hyperphagia, and they are known to be more active and potentially more aggressive during this time. Some basic reminders when recreating in bear country:
Look for fresh bear signs (scat, tracks, carcasses, torn up stumps, overturned rocks, etc.).
When possible, travel in groups of 3 or more.
Make noise, especially when visibility is poor.
Always carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Here are fresh bear signs to look for — especially scat and tracks — since that fall hyperphagia period really ramps up their scavenging near trails. I've been using bear spray on every hike and always check out the Whitefish Trail's own bear safety gear guides. https://z-image-turbo.me
I've been hiking the Whitefish Trail all fall, and the hyperphagia info is such a timely reminder — definitely making noise more now and keeping my bear spray front-and-ready. https://gif-maker.net
