They will explore what squirrels need to survive, identify predator vs. prey defining characteristics, and work together to build habitats that reflect animal needs. Essential Questions: Why do squirrels survive in this environment? What can we learn about an animal by examining its scat and skull? Instructional Goals: 1. Understand what a squirrel needs for survival. 2. Identify the key components of animal (squirrel) survival on the Whitefish Trail. 3. Understand how a squirrel’s unique structure contributes to its survival. 4. Examine animal skulls and scat for evidence if the animal was a predator or prey, herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. 5. Create a model of a habitat that would be appropriate for a predator or prey of their choice and include what the animal would need to survive. Educational Standard(s): 3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all. Overview: - “Why do I see so many squirrels?” activity - Hike on the Whitefish Trail - Scat and Skulls - Habitat Building - Lunch at the Learning Pavilion
