Early-September 2022 Trail Report

Out on the trail right now you can feel the season beginning to change. The mornings are noticeably cooler, squirrels are collecting pinecones, and leaves are changing color. Fall is certainly on the horizon! Right now is a great time to explore the Whitefish Trail and appreciate the beautiful landscapes that surround our community.

Due to erosion from the June high water event and years of stream migration activity, the Swift Creek overlook is now permanently closed. There are signs posted at the trailhead and on the trail to inform users of the closure. DNRC has requested we decommission the WT spur trail to the overlook, post permanent closure signs, and will move the overlook bench to new overlook location. Please stay tuned.

At Smith Lake, Flathead Valley Disc Golf will be holding their 2nd annual Hellroaring Open disc golf tournament on Saturday, 9/10 and Sunday, 9/11. This should be a fun event and there is still time to register or make plans to go out and cheer on the competitors. Click here for more information.

At the Skyles Lake Overlook, we have installed the newest batch of pet tags on the Dog Monument. This monument is a special place where trail users can celebrate and remember their favorite past and present trail pups. You are always invited to install your own dog tag, or you can wait for our next Dog Tag sale this winter.

Last week we completed grading of the access roads and parking lots at Lion Mountain, Big Mountain, and Swift Creek trailheads. Thank you to all our our Adopt-a-Trail and Legacy sponsors who make maintenance work like this possible!
