Mid May Trail Report
Wildflower season has officially started on the Whitefish Trail. Arrowleaf balsamroot is in full show, especially on exposed, western terrain while Heartleaf arnica, Indian paintbrush, and serviceberry are just starting to bloom. Every day, the underbrush turns more green as huckleberries and rocky mountain maple leaf out. May is the perfect time to be outside.
Its been so nice to see the community getting active and healthy while exploring our local public lands on the Whitefish Trail. Runners, hikers, and mountain bikers have been exploring every corner of the trail system during our Hit the Trail Challenge. I have rediscovered trail adventures at Spencer Mountain and have even visited Lupfer this spring.
This construction season, we are excited to build the new spur trail from the South Beaver Loop down to the Beaver Lake Fishing Access Site. We have awarded the trail construction bid to TerraFlow Trails and construction should begin in a few weeks. The new trail and lakeshore improvements are funded by the Montana Recreational Trails Program and matched with your volunteer hours!
