Mid-December Trail Report

Strap on your skis or yak trax, grab your extra warm gloves, and get ready because winter is officially here. With the snowfall over the past week and the promise of more to come, we can quickly forget our soggy November and settle in to snow season.

Though coverage is still spotty in places, Glacier Nordic Club has begun grooming the XC ski trails at Big Mountain. We appreciate all their efforts to maintain these trails all winter long.

When out walking or snowshoeing, remember to stay in the multi-use lane to protect the classic track. Enjoy this FREE community nordic area this holiday season. Hikers and snowshoers should also visit our newest section of the Whitefish Trail at the Holbrook Overlook just up the road from Big Mountain Trailhead.

Trail conditions are still variable throughout the trail system depending on elevation and use. Be ready for hard packed snow or ice in some spots and softer snow or slush in others. Traction devices are recommended throughout.

As a reminder, the following WT trailheads are plowed for winter use: Lion Mountain, Skyles, Beaver Lake, Swift Creek, Reservoir, Big Mountain, and now Holbrook Overlook.

All other trailheads are not plowed consistently, so drive with care if trying to access these areas.
Also, keep your eye out for downed trees along the trail. This week we cleared downed trees on the Beaver Lake Loop and there could be more with the weather forecast. Be safe and have fun!
