Lion Mountain Update

Happy New Year from Whitefish Legacy Partners!  2015 was a GREAT year for the Whitefish Trail.  Our education programs were a huge success, we added TWO new trailheads (South Spencer and Dollar Lake), and we increased the total mileage of the trail to 36 miles  (11 of that this year alone)!  We could not have done it without everyone in the community who pitched in to help.  A huge THANK YOU is due to everyone, from those who donated a dollar to those who donated their time.  We could not have done it without you.  We look forward to another wonderful year in 2016.

Since the snow has temporarily stopped flying, I thought I would lace up my running shoes for jaunt up to the Skyles Lake Overlook at Lion Mountain.  I am happy to report that the entire trail at Lion Mountain is hard packed snow with ZERO ice.  The road to the trailhead was more difficult running than the perfectly packed trail up to the overlook.  If you are just walking the dog, micro-spikes are not an absolute necessity, but if you are out for a jog or want to try snowshoeing off trail, traction devices would help a lot.   Today the trail was decently busy with runners, snowshoers, and even three fat bikers taking advantage of the clear weather.  Start those New Year’s resolutions off right with a quick and easy outing on the Whitefish Trail.  Luckily, devoted users keep the Lion Mountain trail packed all winter long, so there’s no excuse to stay home.  Grab your running shoes or grab your dog because there’s plenty of fun to be had….ON the Whitefish Trail.
