So much for mud season! Although a hurdle for local growers, one of the driest springs in recent memory is making for some great trail conditions. Lion Mountain provides the fastest access to single track, and it’s the access point for the Whitefish Trail Learning Pavilion (grand opening May 27th!). Today, the trail was dry and fast and the wildflowers are a couple weeks ahead of schedule. Large patches of Indian Paintbrush are showing color, and the Heart Leaf Arnica is at peak bloom. Other wildflowers currently in bloom along the Lion Mountain trails are: False Solomon Seal, Blue Lupine, Wild Strawberry, Biscuit Root, and Penstemon. Keep an eye out for hummingbirds wrestling for nectar and deer munching on the undergrowth. For those on mountain bikes, take care in the corners as loose dirt and small rocks have accumulated due to lack of rain. The trail could probably use a good rain to help with the mountain biking friction, but those recreating on foot will enjoy wonderful trail conditions.
