Whitefish Legacy Lands Initiative

Permanent Recreation & Conservation Initiative

Whitefish is one of the few mountain communities in the lower 48 to still enjoy public lands and uninterrupted views directly adjacent to town.  These places are vital wildlife corridors, watersheds, recreation areas, viewsheds and open lands that begin within a few miles from downtown Whitefish.  In order to permanently conserve these “places worth protecting”, Whitefish Legacy Partners (WLP) along with the City of Whitefish, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and conservation-minded private landowners are embarking upon an ambitious initiative: Whitefish Legacy Lands.

Our goal is to permanently protect 2,500 acres of land surrounding Whitefish Lake, which will result in 5 million dollars in revenue for Montana schools, universities and other state trust beneficiaries.  We will create permanent recreation access and amenities in vital areas such as Beaver Lakes and Spencer Mountain, as well as permanently conserve the wetlands and viewsheds in Swift Creek and the paramount lakeshore viewshed just east of Beaver Lakes.  We will utilize a combination of public land transactions such as permanent trail easements and conservation land banking as well as partnering with private landowners concerned with conservation and protecting Whitefish’s stunning landscape, in order for Whitefish residents and visitors to enjoy these lands…forever.
