USFS Taylor/Hellroaring Public Scoping
April 6, 2017 - 10:00 pm - April 7, 2017 - 12:00 am
The Tally Lake Ranger District is requesting comments on activities proposed in the Taylor Hellroaring Project. The district is hosting an open house on Thursday, April 6, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, at the Whitefish Community Center located at 121 E. 2nd Street in Whitefish, to share information on the project and invite public comment.
District personnel have worked with a local collaborative group and have identified the need to treat vegetation and fuels in the area to increase resilience to insects and disease and reduce the risk and severity of large fires. There is also a need to maintain and improve wildlife habitat and increase rust resistant western white pine and whitebark pine. The project is also designed to provide a range of trail experiences for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders.
The proposal includes the development of approximately 40 miles of new trails and one new trailhead. The proposal includes a variety of vegetation treatments including regeneration harvest, partial harvest, understory fuel treatment and prescribed burning on approximately 1884 acres. To facilitate the vegetation treatments approximately 4.9 miles of system road could be developed then closed and placed in stored status for future use. Portions of these roads would be trail routes. Also approximately .73 miles of temporary roads would be built and then reclaimed following use.
The Tally Lake Ranger District is accepting your comments about this proposal until April 28, 2017, so that public input can be used to identify issues that in turn may lead to the development of alternatives to the proposed action. Written, hand-delivered, and oral comments can be delivered to Project Team Leader, Deb Bond (406-758-5204) at 650 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell, MT 59901, “attention Deb Bond”, or email comments to: email@example.com and include “Taylor Hellroaring” in the subject line .
