January 22, 2017 - 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Join Whitefish Legacy Partners on a Snow Science guided hike on Sunday January 22nd, 2017 at 2:00-4:00 pm at the Lion Mountain Trailhead, 2.2 miles west of Whitefish.

Whitefish Trail Education Specialist Kim Corette, Avalanche Forecaster Mark Dundas, and other local snow professionals will lead this public hike. Learn the basics of avalanche safety & practice your skills with a beacon hunt, understand snow metamorphosis and changes in the snowpack, and be introduced to snow survey data collection techniques and applications.

This FREE family-friendly outing will involve an easy one to two mile hike to the Whitefish Trail Learning Pavilion. The trail is packed to the pavilion, so snowshoes and/or skis will not be needed. Please dress warmly and wear snow boots, warm hat and gloves.

The hike will be led by Kim Corette who has several decades of experience working and recreating in snow country. Kim formerly worked as ski patroller at Crystal Mountain in Washington, as a heli-ski guide in the Cascades, taught avalanche levels I – III, collected snow survey data for the USGS, taught Winter Wilderness Field Studies for the University of Montana, and served as a board member the Glacier Country Avalanche Center.
